The American Association of University Women was founded in 1881 based on the belief that a college education is as much a necessity for women as for men. With a current national membership of about 100,000 members, AAUW is a continuing catalyst for change and promotes equity for all women and girls through education, advocacy, and research. Education grants have been awarded to more than 7,000 students in 110 countries, with a total $4 million awarded annually. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization for men and women that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Any citizen over the age of 18 may become a voting member of the League and can work on local, state, regional and national program issues. Sponsorship of the Ruth Pauley Lecture Series is one of the many ways it promotes education on issues which are important to citizens. The League truly exemplifies the motto: “Making Democracy Work.”
